CHELSIA A. RICE
Chelsia A. Rice is from Portland, Oregon, and earned her MFA at the University of Idaho in 2011. Her writing has appeared in Pointed Circle, The Broken Word Anthology, NervyGirl Magazine, About.com and various other publications. She has been teaching writing in the university setting since 2008 and has also taught personal enrichment courses to women in transition since 2005. Her writing influences include Anne Lamott, bell hooks, Dorothy Allison, and Steve Almond.

THERESA BOYAR
Theresa Boyar has lived in Helena for 11 years & has taught writing workshops in many area schools, as well as in non-academic settings. She has over 20 years of experience in tutoring, mentoring, and teaching writing, and her students have ranged in age from 5 to 85. As a freelance copy editor, she has helped several authors finalize and polish their work.
Theresa's poems, short stories, and essays have appeared in several literary magazines, including The Florida Review, Storyglossia, Tar River Poetry, Rattle, & Poet Lore . Her chapbook, Kitchen Witch , was published in 2007 by Dancing Girl Press & her memoir, "Peaches," was selected as a Notable Essay of 2000 by the editors of the Best American Essays series.

Do you want to write stories but don’t know where to begin? Do you have an experience you’'d like to share with the world but you're unsure about how to write about it in a way that grabs a reader's attention? Whether you're interested in fiction or nonfiction, understanding foundational creative writing techniques will help you develop prose that keeps readers interested from beginning to end. In this cross-genre introductory class, writers will focus on craft elements (setting, characterization, point of view, dialogue, and language, just to name a few) that make for vivid, interesting, and compelling writing.
When: Meets for eight weeks. Wednesdays, from April 4 to May 23
Time: 6:00 - 7:30pm

Interested in writing memoir, personal essays, or just want to write about your life? In this class, writers will read essays, model the craft techniques of other authors, participate in writing exercises, journal, and produce their own creative work to bring to the group to be workshopped. In this intimate setting, you'll connect and build community with other creative writers, learn about the craft of nonfiction, and aim to produce a publishable essay.
